The Salt Lake Bees took the field for the first time in 612 days falling to the Reno Aces 5-4 on Opening Night at Smith’s Ballpark.

The Bees came into the ninth inning trailing 5-2 but got back within a run thanks to a Luis Rengifo two-run homer. Following Rengifo’s home run Matt Thaiss worked a walk and Kean Wong was intentionally walked to bring relief pitcher Jake Reed to the plate with two outs. Reed grounded out to end the rally for the shorthanded Bees who started the game with only nine available position players and were forced to concede the designated hitter after an injury to LF Luis Aviles Jr. in the fourth inning.

Jaime Barria got the start for the Bees for the second consecutive opening day and took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) over five and two-thirds innings. Thaiss logged the first RBI of the season for the Bees working a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning and Angels top prospect Jo Adell notched a RBI double in the seventh.

The Bees and Aces will meet for game two of the six-game series on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Limited tickets are still available at www.slbees.com.
