Jones Tops Greinke 6-3
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (Aug. 3, 2016) - Chris Jones and the Salt Lake Bees outdueled Zack Greinke and the Reno Aces by a score of 6 to 3 on Wednesday night. In a Major League rehab appearance, Greinke finished with five innings pitched giving up nine hits and five earned runs while striking out five and was given the loss. With the Arizona Diamondbacks Greinke is 10-3 with a 3.62 ERA with his last loss coming on May 12 to the San Francisco Giants.
"This (rehab assignment) was probably pretty similar," Greinke said comparing his performance previous rehab assignments. "They've always been pretty bad outings for me and they are once I get back to the big leagues too, so hopefully that part will change."
The Bees offense got to Greinke early as Rafael Ortega wasted little time to get the Bees on the board, blasting a leadoff homerun on just the second pitch he saw from the 2009 Cy Young Award winner. Cal Towey followed suit in the bottom of the second, hitting the first pitch of the inning over the right-center field wall. Ortega finished the evening just a triple shy of completing the cycle, raising his batting average on the season to .308. The top three hitters in the Salt Lake lineup combined to go 7-for-15 (.467) and drove in four runs to lead the Bees offense. Chris Jones (4-9) took home his first win since May 12 allowing three runs over six innings of work. Jose Valdez notched his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Valdez is the owner of a 0.70 ERA with the Bees. The Bees and Aces will play a twin-bill tomorrow with game one starting at 5:05 p.m. and game two coming 30 minutes after. Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
