Salt Lake Sets New Single-Season Stolen Base Record, Fall 13-0 to Round Rock

SOUTH JORDAN, UT. - Salt Lake fell into an early six-run hole and could not recover, dropping game five 13-0 to Round Rock on Saturday night. The Bees were held scoreless throughout the night as the Express added seven more runs over the final eight innings.

Game Summary

Round Rock came into game five on a hitting onslaught, batting around and plating six runs in the first inning. A two-RBI single started the scoring, a two-run triple made it 4-0 and a two-run homer capped the scoring at 6-0 as the Express took a big lead into the bottom of the first.

John Taylor kept things going for the visitors in the second, dribbling a ball into left field to plate the runner from second for Round Rock’s seventh run.

The scoreboard remained unchanged until the top of the seventh inning, when the Express extended their lead with three additional runs driven in by a pair of RBI singles and a wild pitch.

The Express broadened their advantage in the top half of the eighth, tacking on three runs courtesy of a fielder's choice and a pair of RBI singles to build a 13-0 margin going into the bottom half.

Zeroes were posted by both sides the rest of the way as the Bees fell on Saturday night.

Game Notes

• Tonight’s loss marks just the third shutout defeat of the season. The last time the Bees were blanked in a game was in an 8-0 home loss to Tacoma on June 18. Round Rock’s victory tonight also secured the season series in their favor, regardless of Sunday.

• Salt Lake went another night without hitting a homer, owning a 14-32 record when they hit zero homers. The Bees have lost their last 13 contests in which they fail to leave the yard at least once.

• The Bees plunked a batter for the fifth straight game, pushing their total in September to eight. It is one shy of PCL leader Tacoma (9) and moves the season count to 82 hit batsmen, second behind Sugar Land (86).

• Nelson Rada broke Salt Lake’s single-season team record with his 38th stolen base of the year in the first inning. The outfielder swiped the bag with two outs, setting the new record at 181 stolen bases. Rada also worked a leadoff walk earlier in the inning, his 67th of the year, as he continues to pace the team in walks. He has now reached base safely in consecutive games and continues to lead the Pacific Coast League in stolen bases. Rada went on to single in his second at-bat, pushing his hit streak to back-to-back performances.

• Salt Lake’s first hit came off the bat of Sebastián Rivero. The catcher lasered a single into center field to lead off the bottom of the second. The knock extended Rivero’s on-base streak to four games, matching his season high.

• Starter Brett Kerry’s 25th appearance and 22nd start of the season lasted just two innings, his shortest outing at any level since May 20 of last season with the Angels’ complex league team. The right-hander struck out one and is now just three strikeouts shy of 100 on the season.

• Niko Kavadas lined his 20th double of the season to right field to start the bottom of the fourth. The first baseman extended his hit and on-base streaks to three games on the two-bagger and has now recorded an extra-base hit in three straight games.

• In the fourth inning, Ben Gobbel earned a base appearance after being hit by a pitch with two outs, extending the infielder's on-base streak to three consecutive games. The infielder singled in his seventh inning at-bat, pushing his hit streak to three games.

• Reliever Shaun Anderson pitched two scoreless innings during his 20th outing of the season. Marking his longest performance since July 31 in Sugar Land, it was also his second scoreless outing over his past three games.

• Making his 32nd appearance of the campaign, right-hander Trevor Martin delivered 2.1 innings for Salt Lake. He permitted three runs, marking the second time in three outings he has given up three earned runs, while issuing two walks and recording two strikeouts.

• In the bottom of the seventh, infielder Arol Vera drew a two-out walk, marking consecutive games in which he has safely reached base.

• In his relief appearance, left-hander Leonard Garcia surrendered three runs on two walks and one strikeout over 1.1 innings. It marked his highest run total allowed in an outing since yielding five against OKC on Aug. 7.

• Dillon Tate spun his fourth straight scoreless outing, extending his scoreless streak to 4.2 innings with 1.1 innings of work tonight. The righty struck out two and allowed two hits in his 21st appearance of the season.
