Johnson Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week

Lefty goes 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two starts during week

Portland, Maine - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs has selected Portland Sea Dogs left-handed pitcher Brian Johnson as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 9th through June 15th.

In two starts during the week, Johnson posted a 2-0 record with a 0.75 ERA (1ER/12IP) and 11 strikeouts over 12 innings. In his first outing of the week, on June 10th, the lefty fired six innings and allowed one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out six, against the Altoona Curve in a game that Portland won 5-1 at Altoona. On Sunday, June 15th, he tossed six shutout innings against the Akron RubberDucks on the road at Canal Park. Johnson allowed just four hits, walked one, and struck out five batters as the Sea Dogs shutout Akron 8-0. He joins fellow lefty Henry Owens and righty Mike McCarthy as the third Portland pitcher to earn Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors during the 2014 season.

On the season, Johnson has made eight starts for Portland, posting a 5-1 record with a 1.71 ERA. The Cocoa Beach, Florida native has held Eastern League hitters to a .199 batting average against and has delivered a 3.1K/BB ratio (40/13) over 47.1 innings. Prior to his call-up to Portland, the lefty went 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts for the Salem Red Sox in the Carolina League. Johnson was drafted by the Red Sox in the 1st round (31st overall) of the 2012 June Draft.
