Shortstop hits .650 with a triple and homer in six games
June 23, 2014

Portland, Maine - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs has selected Portland Sea Dogs shortstop Deven Marrero as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of June 16th through June 22nd.

Marrero appeared in six games and hit .650 (13-for-20) with a triple, a home run, four RBI, and six runs scored. He began the week going 3-for-5 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored Monday against the Erie SeaWolves, and backed that performance up with another three-hit night in four trips to the plate Tuesday, June 17th. Wednesday saw the shortstop launch his third home run of the year, a towering shot onto the Erie Insurance Arena beyond the left field wall in Erie.

The hot-hitting Marrero returned home from Portland's three-city road trip and continued to rake. He tallied six more hits and capped off his week with a 3-for-4 performance against the Altoona Curve Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The Florida native reached in all six games and extended his on-base streak to 19 straight games, currently a league-high.

On the season, Marrero is hitting .292 (70-for-240) with 18 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 35 runs scored, and 36 RBI. He has tallied 12 stolen bases in 18 attempts, walked 30 times and struck out 53. Also a defensive standout, the shortstop is leading his counterparts in the league with a .975 fielding percentage, committing six errors in 241 total chances. Marrero was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 1st round (24th overall) in the 2012 draft.

He joins Mookie Betts as the only other Portland Sea Dogs' player to win Eastern League Player of the Week honors in 2014. Additionally, Sea Dogs' pitchers Henry Owens, Mike McCarthy, and Brian Johnson have all earned Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors this season.
