Sea Dogs Sweep Eastern League Weekly Awards

Betts & Owens Named Eastern League Player and Pitcher of the Week

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs have swept the Eastern League weekly awards for the opening week of the 2014 season. Sea Dogs second baseman Mookie Betts was selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 3rd through the 13th. Sea Dogs left-handed pitcher Henry Owens was tabbed as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.

Mookie Betts hit .457 (16-for-35) with five doubles, a triple, one home run, five RBI, and 11 runs scored to open the season. The 21 year-old leads the league in batting average (.457) and on base percentage (.512), and is also ranked among the league leaders in and total bases (26- Tied 1st) hits (16- 2nd), runs (11- 2nd), extra base hits (7- 2nd), and slugging percentage (.743- 3rd). Betts led off the season with a solo-homer on a 3-2 pitch by Reading's Jesse Biddle and went 4-for-4 in the first game of the season. The Tennessee native has reached base safely in all nine games, and has an on-base streak of 44 straight games dating back to 2013. The second baseman has made one error and is four of five in stolen base attempts. Baseball America ranks Betts as the #7 Prospect in the Red Sox system. Boston drafted Betts in the 5th round of the 2011 draft.

Henry Owens made two starts posting a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and 18 strikeouts to open the season. On Opening Night April 3rd at Reading, Owens pitched a six-inning rain-shortened complete game no-hitter, as Portland beat the Fightins 5-0. The no-hitter was the third in Sea Dogs franchise history and the as a Red Sox affiliate and the first complete-game no-hitter. After surrendering two walks in the first inning, he retired the final 16 batters. On April 9th in Trenton, Owens hurled 6.2 scoreless fanning nine in Portland's 9-2 win. The 21 year-old leads the league in strikeouts (18), shutouts (1), complete games (1), and is tied for the league lead in wins (2) and ERA (0.00). He is also among the leaders in WHIP (0.63-2nd) and batting average against (.140-2nd). Baseball America ranks Owens as the #2 prospect in the Red Sox farm system and the top pitching prospect. Through his two starts this season, the lefty has a career 5-1, 1.26 ERA mark in Double-A over eight starts. The Red Sox drafted Owens as the 36th overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.
