A Trio of Triples Spark Cubs Comeback Win

The South Bend Cubs (13-13) scored three runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth to rally and defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (12-15) on Thursday night.

Chris Kachmar (6 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) went over the 90-pitch mark for the second straight start and held the Lansing offense to just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, keeping the Cubs within striking distance with a gritty outing. He allowed a two-run double down the third-base line to Ryan Gridley in the fourth inning to open up the scoring in the game. It seemed likely it would be the biggest play in a low scoring game, and a bit of a controversial one as the whole Cubs bullpen was right on top of the play and seemed to be convinced the ball was foul.

The Lugnuts added two more runs, one on a sac-fly later in the fourth and Lazaro Armenteros scored on a Kachmar wild pitch in the sixth.

Down 4-0 into the seventh South Bend sparked a comeback.

Nelson Velazquez led the inning off with a triple and just two pitches later scored on a single from Yonathan Perlaza. A couple batters later Bradlee Beesley doubled over the head of Jake Suddleson in left and Perlaza scored to make it 4-2. The Cubs would add one more before it was stretch time on a tapper back to mound from Josue Huma that scored Jake Washer from third.

Eduarniel Nunez tossed a scoreless seventh and Burl Carraway did the same in the eighth to send the game into the ninth with South Bend trailing by one run.

It was Velazquez once again with a leadoff base hit, this time a single to get the ball rolling. Then it was triple time in the Michigan Capital. Bryce Windham tripled home Velazquez to tie things up and Beesley followed with a triple of his own to give the Cubs their first lead.

Carraway recorded one out in the ninth and handed the ball to Samuel Reyes with the game-tying run at first base. Max Schuemann stole second base with two outs and then scampered to third on a wild pitch. But with the tying run just 90 feet away, Reyes got Suddleson to fly out to left to end the ballgame.

What. A. Comeback.

The Cubs now lead the series 2-1 after dropping game one on Tuesday night, and return to .500 on the season.
