Ed Sprague, Sr. owned the Stockton Ports from 1980 to 1986. When the Ports team was for sale after the '96 season, Sprague considered buying the team for a second time.

Oakland A's Statement on the Passing of Ed Sprague Sr.
The Oakland A's issued the following statement on the passing of Ed Sprague Sr., a former A's pitcher, father of Director of Player Development Ed Sprague Jr., and grandfather of Partnership Marketing Manager Payton Sprague:
"The A's organization is deeply saddened by the passing` of Ed Sprague Sr., an original member of the 1968 Oakland A's team and the 1969 club. He was the first of three generations to be part of the A's family, and our condolences are with Ed Jr., granddaughter Payton, and the entire Sprague family during this difficult time."
