Barrera signed a minor league contract out of the Dominican Republic with the Oakland Athletics as a free agent in 2012. He played in 35 games with the Ports in 2017 with a batting average of .228. In 2018, Barrera competed in 88 games with a batting average of .284.
The outfielder was recalled from the Las Vegas Aviators where he was batting .349 with two home runs and seven RBI in 11 games.
Barrera got his first Major League at bat on May 22 and his first Major League hit on May 23 against the Los Angeles Angels.
