EUGENE, OR – The Canadians fell 6-4 to the Eugene Emeralds (SF) Wednesday night at PK Park after a five-run third proved too big of a deficit to overcome. With the loss, the C’s drop into second place and are a half game back of the Ems with 16 games to play, though they are still sitting in playoff position.
After starter Silvano Hechavarria (L, 1-5) set down the first six batters he faced – including five by way of the K – the Emeralds got to him for five runs on five hits in the third to take their first lead of the series.
The C’s answered with a run in the top of the fourth thanks to consecutive doubles from JoJo Parker and Jake Casey, but Eugene got that run back in the home half with a double, a wild pitch and a run-scoring groundout that made it 6-1.
Jaxson West and Ty Southisene started the sixth with back-to-back singles before Parker plugged his second double in as many at-bats to bring the C’s within four. Austin Smith cracked a lead-off solo shot in the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Smith would start the ninth with a solo shot to bring the score to 6-4, but that was all the C’s could muster in a series-tying loss.
Parker’s three hits on the night is a new High-A career best for the top Blue Jays prospect. Smith’s two bombs were the first time he’s gone deep twice as a pro.
Vancouver will look to retake first place tomorrow night. Mississauga, ON native Connor O’Halloran takes the ball opposite #11 Giants prospect Henry Lalane at 6:35 p.m. on the C’s Broadcast Network.
