Playoff Chase Stalls After 5-3 Loss

Spokane scores five unanswered until late rally, C’s lose 5-3

VANCOUVER, BC – An eighth-inning rally wasn’t enough for the Canadians Wednesday night at The Nat when they fell in a 5-3 loss to the Spokane Indians (COL). After the C’s got on the board in the first frame, the Indians tied it up in the next inning. The game remained tied until Spokane scored three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead. The C’s loaded the bases on walks in the eighth and scored two runs without recording a hit but coudln't finish the rally. With the loss, Vancouver was unable to shave a game off their magic number to clinch a postseason spot after Everett (SEA) beat Eugene (SF) earlier in the evening.

The Canadians got on the board first. In the bottom of the opening frame, JoJo Parker reached base on a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. A Jake Casey groundout would allow him to get to third before scoring on a wild pitch. Spokane followed with a solo home run in the top of the second before plating three runs in the fifth to break the tie. They scored one more in the seventh to make it 5-1.

The C’s tried to respond in the seventh inning, when an Austin Smith double with one man on base put two runners into scoring position; however, they couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.

A rally in the eighth was started by the C’s filling the bases with walks, and Maddox Latta scored a run on a wild pitch. Latta’s run was followed by a Gable Mitchell ground out to plate the second run of the inning with no hits and put the C’s behind by two before a pitching change and consecutive outs prevented further scoring. In the ninth, Franly Urena kept the top of the stanza scoreless, but the C’s couldn’t score in the bottom of the frame and eventually fell in defeat.

The Canadians will play again tomorrow when #8 Blue Jays prospect Dasan Hill takes the mound against his counterpart Jordy Vargas. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
