EASTLAKE, OH - Starting pitcher Dane Myers failed to escape the first inning, giving up six runs as the West Michigan Whitecaps lost to the Lake County Captains Monday night at Classic Park by a score of 10-6.
The loss sends the Whitecaps into a three-game losing skid and forces the team to settle for a 3-3 record on their six-game road trip after winning the first three contests.
Myers, a sixth-round draft choice of the Detroit Tigers in the 2017 MLB Draft, has struggled mightily in the first inning of games this season, and continued the trend on Monday, allowing six of the first seven batters he faced to reach in the frame. After throwing 32 pitches, the Whitecaps ended his night, making the right-hander the owner of the Whitecaps shortest start by a pitcher this season with just two-thirds of an inning. The Whitecaps offense plated a pair of runs in the first and fourth on a two-run double by Jordan Pearce and a two-run single by Chris Proctor. Lake County's six-run first featured a two-run single by Nolan Jones and a three-run home run from catcher Josh Rolette. Jones, the #100 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, finished the night going 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.
Myers (3-2) endured his roughest outing of the season, taking his second loss due to lasting just two-thirds of an inning and surrendering six runs. Captains starter Gregori Vasquez (3-4) earned his third win after lasting five innings and allowing four runs. The Whitecaps record falls to 45-44 on the season, with a 9-10 second-half mark. The Captains improve to 9-10 in the second half, with a 38-51 overall record. The Whitecaps committed a season-high six errors in the contest. Brock Deatherage and Brady Policelli led the 'Caps with a pair of hits.
