COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Rey Rivera and Colby Bortles launched home runs to help the West Michigan Whitecaps complete a three-game sweep of the Lake County Captains with a 7-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The 'Caps opened the scoring when Alexis Garcia doubled in the opening inning, stole third base and scored on a Luke Burch groundout to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead. The fourth inning saw the 'Caps extend their lead to 4-0 when Rey Rivera blasted a towering three-run home run off Captains lefty starter Juan Hillman. The Whitecaps chased Hillman out of the game in the fifth as a Bortles two-run home run increased the margin to 7-0.
Pitcher Dane Myers, fresh off the disabled list and making his first start since April 12th, contributed five solid innings for West Michigan. The right-hander allowed only two hits, one walk and scattered four strikeouts. Lake County made things interesting with four seventh-inning runs, but Felix Viloria closed the door on Lake County with a perfect inning of relief in the ninth and picked up his first save of the season. Bortles accumulated three hits to lead the West Michigan offense. Burch and Joey Morgan also recorded multi-hit games with two apiece. Burch has now tallied twelve hits in his last 19 at-bats.
The win for Myers (1-0) represented his first victory as a Whitecap and improved the team's overall season record to 23-19. The Whitecaps have won four of their last six games. Hillman (0-7) gave up all of the 'Caps runs in 4.2 innings and took the defeat. Lake County fell to 19-24 with losses in six of the last eight contests.
