The game featured the Whitecaps debut of top Detroit Tigers prospect Matt Manning; whose night ended after allowing four runs on three hits while walking three and striking out three in the contest.
Manning pitched a scoreless first inning before running into a tough Lake County offense in the second. A two-run triple by Miguel Eladio, followed by Luke Wakamatsu's two-run double helped forced Manning from the contest after tossing 30 pitches in the frame. After the Captains plated a run in the third to extend the lead to 5-0, the Whitecaps slowly chipped away at their five-run deficit. After scoring a run in the fourth, Derek Hill's RBI-single highlighted a two-run fifth inning. In the seventh, Cole Bauml delivered a run with a groundout to bring West Michigan within a run. In the ninth, Drew Longley's sacrifice fly scored Isaac Paredes to tie the game at five.
In the tenth, Derek Hill walked to begin the inning and scored on a fielder's choice to help West Michigan take a 6-5 lead. Isaac Paredes followed with an opposite-field three-run homer to give the Whitecaps a 9-5 lead.
Evan Hill (1-0) pitched sensationally in relief, striking out four batters in 2.1 scoreless innings to get his first victory, while Ryder Ryan (3-4) took his fourth loss after giving up five runs in the late innings. The Whitecaps record moves to 31-12 in the second half, and 76-34 overall while the Captains sit at 46-67 overall with a 19-25 mark in the back half of 2017.
