WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 15, 2018) - The Dash's six-game winning streak came to a close Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark, as Winston-Salem fell to the Carolina Mudcats 6-2 in a rain-shortened, seven-inning affair.
Rain began pouring down in the sixth, and picked up in the seventh. As Dash reliever Zach Thompson finished his warm-up pitches ahead of the top of the eighth, lightning and thunder crackled overhead, and the umpires signaled for the tarp to come onto the field. The game was called after a brief delay.
Dash right-hander Jimmy Lambert (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs in his 5.1 innings pitched, striking out six and walking two. Mudcats right-hander Braden Webb (1-1) picked up the victory, allowing two runs on six scattered hits in his 5.1 innings pitched.
Carolina (6-5) started the scoring early, bringing a run around just two batters into the game. After Dallas Carroll led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch, Keston Hiura lifted a sacrifice fly to bring him in.
But, Winston-Salem (7-4) responded in the bottom of the second. Micker Adolfo led off the frame and cracked a solo home run to left-center field to tie the game, his second home run of the season and second in as many days. Adolfo, who also doubled in the contest, extends his hitting streak to eight games.
Carolina retook the lead in the ensuing half-inning. Robie Rojas led off the frame with a single and moved to second on an error from Dash third baseman Zach Remillard. After advancing to third on a double play, he came in to score on a wild pitch, Lambert's second of the inning and third of the game.
After Lambert exited the ballgame, the Mudcats tacked on three more runs against Dash right-hander Matt Foster. He allowed two runs in the fifth-one charged to Lambert-and two more in the seventh when Carolina strung together four straight hits to begin the inning.
Winston-Salem added a run in the bottom of the sixth. After Gavin Sheets started the inning with a double, Remillard followed with a run-scoring double to plate the Dash's final run of the contest.
The loss snaps the Dash's six-game streak with 10 or more hits, and it marks the first time this season that Winston-Salem has been outhit in a game.
With the opening homestand over, the Dash hit the road to Kinston, N.C., to take on the Down East Wood Ducks in a three-game series. Winston-Salem starts the series with right-hander Dane Dunning (1-0, 0.79 ERA) taking the hill against right-hander Walter Weickel (0-1, 3.86 ERA) with first pitch at Grainger Stadium set for 7 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
