Collector's Corner: Cupdate #3

January 15, 2014

I've covered what the Timber Rattlers have done with their souvenir cups over the years (here and here), now let's take a look at what other teams have done.

Dallas Stars                             Maker: Digital Replay                        16 oz.

A 16 ounce souvenir cup.  Seriously.  What, they wouldn't make you a 12 ounce one, Stars?  There is one thing this cup is good for, however, dunking Oreos in milk.

Minnesota Twins                   Maker: Churchill Container  32 oz.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to throw a slider while drinking a soda at a baseball game?  Me neither.

New Orleans Zephers                        Maker: Berry Plastics                        32 oz.

Other than the obvious soda or beer companies, I don't have too many cups with advertisements on them.  I guess after you drink all that sugar, you can wear it off by going rock climbing.

Cleveland Indians                  Maker: Berry Plastics                        24 oz.

Fun facts about Slider from the side of the cup include that he likes to eat mustard right out of the wide mouth jar (probably why his nose is yellow) and that one of his favorite movies is "Major League II" (everyone knows that Major League: Back to the Minors is the best of the three).

Dayton Dragons                     Maker: Berry Plastics                        32 oz.

Toledo Mud Hens                  Maker: Digital Replay                        32 oz.

If you enjoy drinking while a giant eye of a MiLB logo stares at you, then these are the cups for you!

Cleveland Indians                  Maker: Berry Plastics                        32 oz.

We've come a long way in player pictures on cups technology, as this Grady Sizemore cup demonstrates.

Toronto Blue Jays                  Maker: Dixie                           32 oz.

They have some really big Dixie cups north of the border.  I'm pretty sure that Carlos Delgado hit a popup to short left on that swing.

Vancouver Canucks               Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

Roberto Luongo is trying to have a staring contest with you.  Don't blink.  Bobby Lu never loses a staring contest.

Kansas City Royals                 Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

The skyline of Kansas City on this cup is really cool.  In case you were wondering, it was not the Royals time (although the Royals swept the Brewers in the series I was there, so it was their time for those three days, but in general, it was not)

Toronto Maple Leafs             Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

When you turn this cup on the other side, Dion Phaneuf takes a slap shot, but also changes his jersey, as they combined pictures from two different games.  This cup would be better if it featured Phaneuf's wife.

Houston Astros                      Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

To celebrate their 45th Anniversary, the Astros put their uniform history on a cup.  Gotta love the rainbow jerseys.

Seattle Mariners                    Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

While the Royals went with a full color picture of the KC skyline on their cup, the Mariners went 3D lenticular of the Seattle skyline, with similar awesome results.

Wisconsin Badgers                Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

The Badgers tried to set the record for most people in a montage on a cup.  They succeeded.

Milwaukee Brewers               Maker: Packer Plastics          14 oz.

It seems like Packer Plastics should be in Green Bay, doesn't it?  It's not though; it's in Lawrence, Kansas.  That was my next guess.  The 1991 Brewers drew under 1.5 million, their lowest attendance since 1986.  Apparently people felt they did not have to be there.  Kind of upset I missed "Kenner Starting Line-Up Figurine Day" on May 12th.  That's the day after my sister's birthday, so she should have asked that we go.  I'm going to blame her.

Milwaukee Brewers               Maker: Berry Plastics                        32 oz.

This cup features a caricature of Jamie Farr.  Oh wait, that's supposed to be Bob Uecker.  My bad.

Boston Red Sox                      Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

Not sure if other teams do this, but the Red Sox produce cups for their interleague series.  Genius.

Nashville Sounds                   Maker: Dynamic Drinkware  32 oz.

A co-worker asked if the picture of Prince Fielder was photo shopped.  Nope, he really was that "skinny" at one point.

Well, those are some of the high/low points of my cup collection.  You'll notice that most of my favorites are made by Dynamic Drinkware, conveniently located in Oshkosh, WI.  They are on the cutting edge of cup technology, or maybe it's more the sipping edge.  All this writing has me really thirsty.  I'm going to go have a Dew, at least 32 ounces.
