LOUISVILLE, KY - The Louisville Bats (13-28) have dropped the first game of the series against the Columbus Clippers (18-23) in a 6-5 loss that came in the season-high eighteenth inning, and after franchise-record five hours and thirty-five minutes of play.
Louisville sent right-hander Rookie Davis to the mound to start the game, and he lasted three innings and surrendered just one run off of three hits and three walks, and struck out two with his 63 pitches thrown.
The Bats opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff single from Phillip Ervin. The offense carried this momentum through the inning with RBI singles from Jesse Winker, Sebastian Elizalde, and Tony Renda, bringing Louisville to an early 3-0 lead over the Clippers.
Columbus immediately countered in the top of the second inning, after drawing three walks and collecting a run due to a single off the bat of Ronny Rodríguez. Rookie Davis was able to limit the damage and bring the Bats into the bottom of the second with a 3-1 lead.
Right-hander Barrett Astin took the hill for the Bats to open the fourth inning, and his night finished after three innings pitched, in which he surrendered two earned runs and struck out seven batters. These two runs were given up when Astin yielded the game-tying two run home run to Austin Jackson in the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Columbus tacked on the go-ahead run that came with the help of a Louisville error, and they were able to produce a 4-3 edge. The Clippers later added on another run in the eighth, extending their lead to 5-3.
After Hernan Iribarren smacked a one-out infield single in the eighth inning, Peter O'Brien blasted a two-run home run to left center, tying the game at five.
The game remained locked at five runs apiece until the top of the eighteenth inning, when Eric Stamets hit an RBI single to left, plating Richie Shaffer. The Bats were unable to counter in the bottom of the inning, and lost the late-inning contest.
Bats pitching combined for season-high 23 strikeouts on the night and season-high 11 walks allowed.
Game two of the series with the Columbus Clippers will take place tomorrow, with the first pitch set at 6:35 p.m. at Louisville Slugger Field. Poised to take the mound for the Bats is right-hander Jackson Stevens (2-3, 6.81 ERA), and right-hander Travis Banwart (1-2, 6.06 ERA) will start for the Clippers.
