COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia used a surge of offense in the middle innings of Wednesday's game against West Virginia to win the series finale, 3-1. Hansel Moreno doubled twice, scored a run and plated another to spur the Fireflies to the victory.
Moreno's valor in the sixth and seventh frames helped erase a one-run deficit. Moreno used his speed to score from second base on a routine ground out in the sixth and then plated an insurance run with a two-bagger in the following frame.
Columbia's pitchers were splendid as well. Starter Zac Grotz allowed just one run over six innings and struck out five. Then reliever Conner O'Neil (W, 5-0) picked up his fifth win of the season after chucking three scoreless frames. O'Neil struck out five and retired all nine hitters he faced.
Also worth noting, Scott Manea finished Wednesday's game with a pair of hits and ended up reaching base safely three times.
