The Biloxi Shuckers (24-22) were shutout for a second straight game, falling 3-0 to the Mobile BayBears (19-26) on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. Biloxi remains four games back of Pensacola in the South Division despite the defeat.
Biloxi put together one of their best scoring opportunities in the third. Max McDowell started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by Michael O'Neill. Trent Grisham bounced into a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners with only one out. RHP Luis Madero (W, 2-2) struck out Jake Gatewood for the second out and got a groundball from Patrick Leonard to end the Shuckers threat.
The BayBears scored their only runs of the game in the fifth. Connor Justus doubled in a run off Shuckers RHP Alec Bettinger (L, 1-4) to give Mobile a 1-0 lead with two outs. The run snapped a 17.1 innings scoreless streak for Bettinger, the longest streak by any Shuckers pitcher this season. Jahmai Jones and Jack Kruger both notched RBI singles in the fifth to put the BayBears ahead 3-0.
The Shuckers nearly put together a response in the top of the sixth. Dillon Thomas, Weston Wilson and C.J. Hinojosa all drew walks from RHP Joe Gatto (H, 3), who gave way to RHP Adam Hofacket (H, 1), who struck out McDowell to leave the bases loaded. Hofacket allowed a runner to reach third in the seventh when Grisham walked and put himself 90 feet away on a single by Gatewood, but Leonard flied to shallow right and Thomas struck out, stranding Grisham.
RHP Devin Williams spun two perfect innings for the Shuckers, striking out three, while RHP Nattino Diplan worked a scoreless eighth, keeping the Shuckers within striking distance. RHP Ryan Clark (S, 4) entered in the ninth for the BayBears and retired the side in order, securing his fourth save.
Game two of the Shuckers tangle with the BayBears is on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. Biloxi will send RHP Johan Belisario (3-0, 2.08) to the hill against BayBears LHP Max Herrmann (0-0, 1.5).
