Behind a dominant outing from the pitching staff and another home run by Weston Wilson, the Biloxi Shuckers (20-20) blanked the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (14-26) 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Shuckers claimed the series win with the victory in the rubber match.
As he's done all season, Wilson continued to hit the ball hard against Jumbo Shrimp pitching. Facing RHP Jordan Yamamoto (L, 2-4) with one out in the fourth, Wilson cranked a solo home run to left, his tenth of the season and ninth against Jacksonville, to give Biloxi a 1-0 lead.
The Shuckers added to their lead in the top of the fifth. Luis Aviles Jr. led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Batting with the infield drawn in, catcher Robie Rojas singled up the middle, driving in Aviles to make it 2-0. The single was the first Double-A hit for Rojas, who was added to the Shuckers roster before the game on Wednesday.
On the mound, RHP Bowden Francis (W, 1-3) turned in his best outing with the Shuckers, throwing six scoreless innings. The righty allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out eight in his start, retiring the final eight batters that he faced en route to his first Double-A win.
RHP Cody Ponce (H, 2) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Shuckers and LHP Daniel Brown (H, 3) worked around two base runners in the eighth inning to keep the Jumbo Shrimp off the board. After Brown retired John Silviano for the first out in the ninth, RHP Luke Barker (S, 3) came in and took care of Bryson Brigman and Rodrigo Vigil to secure his third save of the season.
Biloxi now returns to MGM Park to start a five-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. RHP Alec Bettinger (0-3, 6.75) is set to take the mound for the Shuckers while the Lookouts have not named a starter.
