RHP Zach Davies (W, 1-1) twirled six quality innings and struck out nine for the Biloxi Shuckers (75-54, 34-25) in their 6-3 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (63-63, 33-25) on Wednesday night. With the win, Biloxi takes over sole possession of first place in the second half.
While Davies worked his magic on the mound, the Shuckers offense provided the run support early and often. Troy Stokes Jr. belted his 18th long ball of the year in the bottom of the first. Two frames later, Corey Ray smacked his league-leading 27th tater of the year out to right field. A Tyler Heineman run-scoring single and an error by Mitch Nay extended the Shuckers lead to 4-0.
Davies possessed pinpoint command throughout the night. His lone mistake pitch came to Gavin LaValley, who cranked his second home run of the series in the fifth to make it a 4-1 contest. The right-hander tossed 90 pitches over his six innings, allowing two hits and a walk to go along with his nine K's.
Heineman added a second RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Trent Grisham brought in a run on a groundout to first to make it 6-1. RHP Nattino Diplan surrendered a pair of runs in the seventh when Chris Okey smashed his fifth home run of the season out to left field. RHP Miguel Sanchez (S, 1) earned his first save with the Shuckers by shutting down the Blue Wahoos over two innings while striking out four.
The Shuckers look for their third five-game sweep of the season at MGM Park when they send LHP Cameron Roegner (0-1, 6.39) to the mound. Pensacola will toss RHP Wyatt Strahan (7-10, 6.62) with first pitch coming at 6:35 PM CT on a Double Play Thursday. Fans can enjoy $2 Yuengling, $2 hot dogs, $2 fountain sodas and $3 weekly draft beer specials.
