The Mobile BayBears (43-34) collected 14 more hits on Saturday night in an 8-3 defeat of the Biloxi Shuckers (45-34) at MGM Park. RHP Thomas Jankins (L, 8-4) hurled seven quality innings in the loss.
Mobile came quickly with the bats in the top of the first, cracking five hits and scoring three runs in the process. Jankins settled down and scattered his hits beyond the first, allowing just one run in the third inning and ending his night by surrendering just two earned runs on 11 knocks over his seven frames.
Biloxi inched back in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run to right field from Corey Ray, his 11th of the year. Those two runs were the only tallies RHP Joe Gatto (W, 2-3) allowed over six innings of work. The BayBears' starter struck out three en route to the win.
The Shuckers added another run in the seventh on a Tyler Heineman RBI single to make it a 4-3 affair. Down a run, Biloxi had a chance to tie the game with runners in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth. Lucas Erceg bounced out to first to end the seventh, and RHP Zac Ryan (S, 1) struck out both Trent Grisham and Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. with runners at second and third to end the threat in the eighth.
The BayBears put the game on ice in the ninth when Brennon Lund belted a two-out, two-strike grand slam off the right field foul pole, putting Mobile up 8-3. Jack Kruger and Brandon Sandoval each collected four hits in the contest, and the BayBears now have 44 hits over the first three games of the series in Biloxi.
The Shuckers turn to RHP Marcos Diplan (0-0, 0.00) in his second Double-A start to halt a four-game skid, while the BayBears trot out RHP Sean Isaac (0-0, 9.00). First pitch on a Military Salute Sunday is set for 4:05 PM CT.
