Biloxi Shuckers LHP Quintin Torres-Costa has been added to the Southern League South Division All-Star team, the Southern League announced on Saturday. With the addition of Torres-Costa, the Shuckers now have ten players on the All-Star team, the most in the Southern League. It is the first All-Star nod of Torres-Costa's career.
In 17 appearances this season, Torres-Costa is 1-2 with a 1.48 ERA, striking out 36 batters in 24.1 innings of work. He made ten appearances out of the bullpen this season before allowing an earned run and put together a 15.2 innings scoreless streak, tied with Shuckers All-Star RHP Zack Brown for the longest scoreless streak of the season for Biloxi. Torres-Costa has also collected a pair of saves and pitched more than one inning in ten of his 17 outings this year.
Taken in the 35th round of the 2015 Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers out of the University of Hawaii, Torres-Costa has been right in the middle of the Shuckers dominant bullpen. The 23-year-old has picked up five holds this season, tied for second in the Southern League behind Shuckers All-Star RHP Jon Olczak. Additionally, he is second in the Southern League amongst relievers in strikeouts per nine innings ratio (13.32). After a short stint on the disabled list, Torres-Costa returned to the Shuckers on Friday night against Jacksonville, recording the final out of the fifth inning to strand the bases loaded.
Torres-Costa joins Brown, Olczak, RHP Nate Griep, RHP Thomas Jankins and RHP Nick Ramirez on the pitching staff for the South Division All-Star team. The Shuckers also have four position players, Jake Gatewood, Jake Hager, Corey Ray and Troy Stokes Jr., on the All-Star roster. It is the second time in the teams' four-year history they have placed double-digit players on the All-Star team, after 12 players were named to the 2015 All-Star Team. The All-Star Game will take place at Regions Field in Birmingham on June 19 at 7:05 PM.
