The Biloxi Shuckers (14-16) fell 9-2 in their rubber match against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (20-10) on Sunday afternoon at Blue Wahoos Stadium. With their ten-game road trip now complete, the Shuckers return to MGM Park for a five-game series against the Montgomery Biscuits starting Monday night at 6:35 pm.
A Major League bat helped the Blue Wahoos take the lead in the first. Following singles from Luis Arraez and Alex Kirilloff, Miguel Sanó hit a three-run homer to left, giving Pensacola an early 3-0 advantage. Jaylin Davis would add another tally in the frame with a solo home run to center, his fourth of the season, making it 4-0 Blue Wahoos. RHP Alec Bettinger (L, 0-3) would settle down after the first allowing just one hit during the rest of his five frames on the mound.
Biloxi responded with runs in the second and third. C.J. Hinojosa drove in Weston Wilson with a single in the second, and Trent Grisham scored on a throwing error by Sano in the next frame, bring the Shuckers with two at 4-2. RHP Griffin Jax (W, 2-0) clamped down through the middle frames, retiring ten consecutive batters at one point.
In the top of the seventh, Biloxi had their best chance to tie the game. Hinojosa singled with one out, bringing up Max McDowell. The Shuckers catcher smashed a ball to deep left field that bounced off the top of the wall and back into the field of play, just missing a game-tying home run. Hinojosa attempted to score from first on the play but was cut down at the plate for the second out. RHP Ryan Mason (S, 5) came on and recorded the final out of the frame, ending the Shuckers attempt at a rally.
The Blue Wahoos pulled away late with two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth, tagging RHP Marcos Diplan for five runs in two innings of work.
The Shucker now begin a five-game series at home against the Montgomery Biscuits on Monday night at 6:35 pm. RHP Johan Belisario (1-0, 3.29) is scheduled to start for the Shuckers against Biscuits LHP Josh Fleming (3-1, 1.93).
