In what was projected to be his last start with the Biloxi Shuckers (14-8), LHP Wade Miley (W, 1-1) turned in a sensational outing against the Birmingham Barons (10-12) on Friday night, hurling 6.0 innings and striking out 11 in a 5-1 Shuckers win at Regions Field.

Miley struck out four of the first six batters that he faced, and picked off Zack Collins after the Barons catcher walked in the first. Jameson Fisher singled with two outs in the second, but was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.

The Shuckers took the lead in the top of the second inning thanks to the bottom of the lineup. Clint Coulter doubled down the left field line and motored around to score on a single by the nine-hole hitter Wendell Rijo, putting Biloxi on the board. Miley cruised through the third, fourth and fifth inning, allowing just a single to Danny Mendick. The lefty struck out two in each of his first five innings of work, and finished with seven strikeouts looking.

Biloxi struck against Barons starter RHP Spencer Adams (L, 1-2) again in the fourth. Jake Hager and Coulter each singled, and with Rijo batting, executed a double steal. Hager raced in to score on a throwing error by Collins, making it 2-0. Rijo delivered his second hit of the night, a double to left that allowed Coulter to trot into home, extending Biloxi's lead to 3-0. Troy Stokes Jr. swapped spots with Rijo, driving him in with a double that pushed Biloxi to a 4-0 advantage.

Miley closed out his appearance with an unconventional 1-2-3 inning. After walking Bryant Flete, Mendick bounced into a fielder's choice and was picked off for the second out. Facing Tito Polo, Miley finished off his outing with a strikeout looking of the Barons centerfielder. Miley's 11 strikeouts are the most by a Shuckers pitcher this season.

The Baron's scored their lone run off reliever Jon Olczak in the seventh. The first three batters all recorded hits against Olczack, but the right-hander got an assist from his catcher as Tyler Heineman threw out a runner trying to advance to third on a ball that slipped to the backstop. Olczack then induced a groundout and struck out Fisher to end the inning.

Boone Logan, making his first appearance on a rehab assignment with the Shuckers, hurled 1.0 inning and allowed just one hit, a soft single to centerfield by Mendick.

Game three of a five-game series is on Saturday night at 6:30 pm CT. Biloxi has not named a starter while the Barons are scheduled to send RHP Jordan Stephens (1-3, 4.50) to the mound. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9, on TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
