Blue Wahoos Announce 2018 Coaching Staff

PENSACOLA, Fla., - On the heels of a Southern League Championship, the Cincinnati Reds announced their minor league coaching staff assignments for the upcoming 2018 season on Tuesday. Two-time All-Star Jody Davis takes the helm of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos with a new coaching staff. The only returnee is major league veteran, pitching coach Danny Darwin. Two World Series Champions round out the staff as Mike Devereaux enters his first year in the Reds organization as hitting coach while Lenny Harris is serving as bench coach.

Jody Davis is in his third year in the Reds organization after spending two years in the Padres' system and five years in the Cubs' organization, including four seasons as a manager in the minor league level. Davis has spent the past two seasons in the Reds organization as hitting coach with the Triple-A Louisville Bats. Davis enjoyed a 10-year Major League career with the Cubs (1981-1988), where he was an All-Star in 1984 and 1986, and the Atlanta Braves (1988-1990). In 1986, he won a Rawlings Gold Glove and threw out a modern record 89 attempted base stealers.
Danny Darwin, who pitched for 21 years in the major leagues, enters his third year with Pensacola. Darwin amassed one of the best pitching staffs in the Southern League in 2017 with the second lowest ERA in the league with a 3.14. In just two seasons with the Blue Wahoos, he has worked with 13 pitchers who have gone on to make their Major League debuts: Wandy Peralta, Barrett Astin, Rookie Davis, Amir Garrett, Sal Romano, Ariel Hernández, Luis Castillo, Kevin Shackelford, Jackson Stephens, Alejandro Chacin, Tyler Mahle, Deck McGuire and Keury Mella. Darwin amassed 171 wins and 182 losses over his career for eight different Major League teams with a 3.84 earned run average.
Mike Devereaux, a World Series Champion with Atlanta in 1995, enters his first season in the Reds organization after spending six seasons in the Rockies' system. Devereaux played 12 seasons in the major leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers. With the Braves in 1995, Devereaux was named Most Valuable Player of the National League Championship Series.
In his second year with the Reds, Lenny Harris is serving as the Blue Wahoos bench coach, bringing both Major League and Minor League coaching experience. Before joining the Reds player development staff, Harris spent the previous five seasons in the Marlins organization, working as third base coach in 2016 and parts of 2015. He also worked as the Marlins' assistant Major League hitting coach and coached on their Gulf Coast League team. Before joining the Marlins, he spent three seasons in the Dodgers organization. He began his Major League coaching career in 2008 as hitting coach for the Nationals after serving parts of two seasons as Washington's minor league field coordinator. Harris played 18 Major League seasons with the Reds, Dodgers, Mets, Rockies, Diamondbacks, Brewers, Cubs and Marlins. He became a World Series Champion in 2003 with the Marlins and ended his career as Major League Baseball's all-time pinch-hits leader with 212.  
Tyler Moos returns to Pensacola for his third season serving as the squad's athletic trainer. The Southern League's 2017 athletics trainer of the year, Moos previously worked in the Seattle Mariners organization with the Tacoma Rainiers (2015) and the Desert Mavericks (2013-14). Joseph Miranda, strength and conditioning coach, enters his first year with the Reds organization after spending last season with the Lowell Spinners, the short-season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
