ABOUT FRED McGRIFF:
McGriff, now 53, played 19 Major League seasons including his first five (5) with the Toronto Blue Jays where he hit 125 of his 497 career home runs. He was a part of one of the biggest trades in Blue Jays history when along with Tony Fernandez, McGriff was traded to the San Diego Padres for Joe Carter and future Hall of Fame second baseman Roberto Alomar.
Many remember McGriff as a member of the Atlanta Braves where he spent five (5) seasons helping the National League powerhouse to a pair of World Series. In 1995, McGriff would hit .261 with two home runs in a six-game series victory over Cleveland, while the following year, the Braves would fall to the New York Yankees despite hitting .300 with two home runs and six RBI in the six (6) game series.
McGriff remains on the National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot garnering 21.7% of the BBWAA votes in 2017. McGriff was a five (5) time All-Star and during his peak years (1988-94) carried a .288 batting average with 148 games played, 35 home runs and 95 RBI. Many say that due to the MLB work stoppage in 1994, this prevented McGriff from joining the 500 home run club as he finished his 19-year career with 497.
Fred McGriff becomes the final member of the 2017 Superstar Series presented by Blakes & The BC Sports Hall of Fame. Former Atlanta Braves slugger Dave Justice (July 18th) and Corey Koskie (August 8) were announced earlier in the week.
