CHARLESTON, WV - A key cog in one of the most dominant pitching staffs in Charleston history, RHP Christian Morris has been added to the RiverDogs roster as announced by the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

A Mid-Season All-Star with Charleston in 2016, Morris gets the call up from Extended Spring Training following a successful second pro season. After joining the RiverDogs roster in late April of last year, Morris became a mainstay in the rotation, finishing the year going 8-5 with a 2.99 ERA in 22 starts while finishing second on the club in strikeouts and innings pitched. The Williston, FL native racked up 99 punch outs to 24 walks in 120.1 innings while finishing seventh in the league among all qualifying pitchers in ERA and fourth in WHIP (1.07).

In a corresponding move, RHP Nick Nelson was placed on the seven-day disabled list yesterday with the move retroactive to Sunday, April 23.

Morris made one spot appearance for High-A Tampa this year, turning in four scoreless innings on April 10 against Ft. Myers, giving up three hits and striking out a pair at Steinbrenner Field.

The former Indiana Hoosier, was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 6-12, 2016 for his performance against the Asheville Tourists on June 9 when he tossed six scoreless innings and allowing just a lone hit, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

During a postseason bound 2016 season, Morris was part of a RiverDogs pitching staff that was consistently the most dominant staff in the league and one of the greatest ever seen in the Lowcountry. Charleston hurlers combined to strike out 1,248 batters to set a new franchise record dating back to 1980, 67 more punch outs than the 2011 RiverDogs. In his first year as the RiverDogs pitching coach, Justin Pope guided the club to a league best 3.03 ERA in the regular season, the best mark for a pitching staff under the RiverDogs name and second only to the 1988 Rainbows (2.44). The Charleston staff's 1.176 WHIP was also the best mark in franchise history.

With their retooled roster, The RiverDogs continue the series with the West Virginia Power with game two on Tuesday night from Appalachian Power Park. RHP Freicer Perez (0-1, 7.71) will toe the rubber for Charleston, opposed by RHP Luis Escobar (2-0, 3.24). First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
