Five Former Knights Players Looking to Win World Series
Lopez, Rowand, Renteria, Torres & Uribe Have Ties to Charlotte
FORT MILL, S.C. - Five former Charlotte Knights players will be pursuing a second World Series championship when the World Series begins on Wednesday between the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants.
The Giants have former Knights LHP Javier Lopez, OF Aaron Rowand, SS Edgar Renteria, INF Andres Torres and INF Juan Uribe on their roster as they take on the Texas Rangers in the World Series.
Lopez is making his second World Series appearance after being part of the 2007 Boston Red Sox championship team. The left handed relief specialist made 26 appearances out of the Charlotte bullpen 2006 going 2-1 with a 0.55 ERA (2 ER/33.0 IP). Lopez stuck out 26 hitters for the Knights while walking only six.
Rowand's last minor league game was with the Knights in 2003. He was an International League All-Star for Charlotte in 2001 when he hit .295 (97-329) with 16 home runs and 48 RBI. He later went on to win the 2005 World Series as a member of the Chicago White Sox.
Shortstop Edgar Renteria played in Charlotte in 1996 before being called up to the Florida Marlins where he was named the National League Rookie of the Year for hitting .309 in 106 games.
Torres played in 87 games for the Knights in 2004. That season he hit .295 with eight home runs, 26 RBI and a team high 23 stolen bases. Torres had 95 hits for the Knights and a team best .371 on base percentage.
Uribe was with the Knights in 2008 on a major league rehab assignment. He played in just three games going 2-11 with two RBI. Uribe was also a member of the White Sox championship team in 2005.
