Garcia's Blast Leads Knights Past 'Hens 5-4 Sunday in Toledo
(TOLEDO, OH) - Leury Garcia's three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning helped lead the Charlotte Knights to a 5-4 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Sunday in the middle game of their three-game series from Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH. The win was Charlotte's first of the series and fourth over their last five games.
Charlotte starter Terance Marin (1-2, 9.45) allowed three runs on four hits over 5.1 innings and earned his first win of the season. Marin, a native of Modesto, CA, struck-out six batters on the afternoon. It was just his second start of the season.
The Knights scored first on Sunday and did so in the top of the third inning with help from Garcia, who singled off Toledo reliever Michael Crotta (0-1, 5.68). After Tim Anderson grounded into a 6-4 force out, Carlos Sanchez doubled to give the Knights runners on second and third base with just one out. Two batters later, Jason Coats walked to load the bases for J.B. Shuck.
With Shuck at the plate, Crotta uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed Anderson to score the game's first run. Anderson's run gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.
One inning later, Vinny Rottino, who was activated off the team's disabled list before the game, ripped a one-out double. Danny Hayes, the hero on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark, followed with a walk to give the Knights two runners on base with just one out. Now, it was Garcia's turn.
Garcia, who was playing in his 13th game of the season with the Knights, drove a three-run home run over the center field fence to give the Knights a 4-0 lead at that point. Garcia finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, the home run, three RBIs, and a stolen base.
Toledo, who no-hit the Knights on Saturday in the opener, added their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run from Steven Moya -- his first of two dingers on the day.
Two innings later, Anderson singled home Garcia for Charlotte's fifth run of the day. Anderson, who swiped two bases on the afternoon, also finished with two hits. In total, the Knights combined to steal four bases against Toledo on Sunday.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Moya was at it again. After a one out double by Casey McGehee, Moya launched his second long ball of the day. The two-run home run was his fourth of the season, which is currently tied for the most in the International League.
With the Knights ahead by a score of 5-3, manager Julio Vinas handed the ball to RHP Daniel Webb to close the game out in the ninth. Webb allowed an RBI double to Corey Jones, which pulled the Mud Hens to within one run, down 5-4. Still, Webb battled back and retired the final two batters he faced in the inning to end the game. He earned his second save of the season.
The Knights will play the finale of their three-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) on Monday at 6:35 p.m. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on the flagship station for Charlotte Knights baseball, ESPN 730 AM and charlotteknights.com.
