All Knights Stadium Team - Managers
There have been 17 different managers in the 24-year history of Knights Stadium. Thus far, those managers have combined to win 1,611 games, make six playoff appearances, win three division crowns and two Governors’ Cup titles (1993 & 1999).
Charlie Manuel (1993) – Before Manuel was guiding the Phillies to consecutive World Series appearances in the late 2000’s, the Northfork, WV native led the Charlotte Knights to their first-ever Governors’ Cup title back in 1993 – his only season at the helm of the Knights. Under Manuel, the Knights went 86-55 in the regular season – there first season in the International League - before beating Rochester in five games in the Governors’ Cup finals. The 86 regular season wins are the most in the Knights Stadium era. Manuel’s ’93 squad was headlined by 22-year-old Jim Thome, who would claim IL MVP honors after hitting .332 with 25 home runs and 102 RBI. Manuel, 69, enters his 12th season as a Major League manager (9th with the Phillies) in 2013. He holds a career 982-800 (.551) record as a Major League skipper having produced winning seasons in nine of his first 11 seasons.
Tom Spencer (1999) – Like Manuel, Spencer led the Knights to a Governor’s Cup championship in his only season as Knights’ skipper. Spencer guided the 1999 team – the first year as a White Sox affiliate – to an 82-62 record and a wild card berth before knocking of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons in the first round and the Durham Bulls in the finals. For his efforts, he was tabbed the first, and thus far only, International League Manager of the Year in Knights history. Spencer has managed four different teams in three different organizations since his one-year stint in Fort Mill. Most recently, the Gallipolis, OH, native managed the Lancaster Jet Hawks (Houston) of the California League in 2011.
Razor Shines (2006) -- After five years managing at the lower levels, the White Sox rewarded Shines with a promotion to Triple-A in 2006. Shines responded by guiding the club to a 79-62 record and their first division title in 13 seasons. The Knights dominated the IL South in 2006 finishing 15 ½ games better than second-place Durham. Although his team would lose in four games to Toledo in the first round of the IL playoffs, Shines would be promoted to the White Sox as their third base coach in 2007. Shines was named the manager of the Great Lakes Loons, single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, this offseason after serving as the team’s hitting coach in 2012.
Joel Skinner (2012-present) – In his first season as Knights’ manager, Skinner revitalized a franchise that had finished under .500 for five consecutive seasons. The 51-year-old skipper led the Knights to an 83-win season in 2012 and their first Governors’ Cup finals appearance since 1999. In fact, the 83 wins are the most by a Knights team since the 1993 team managed by Charlie Manuel won 86. Besides winning baseball games, Skinner was tasked with guiding some of the top prospects in the White Sox organization including OF Trayce Thompson, INF Carlos Sanchez and OF Jared Mitchell. As announced in December, Skinner will be back at the reins of the Knights for the final season at Knights Stadium in 2013.
Nick Capra (2002-04) – Capra earns finalist honors as being the only manager in Knights Stadium history to manage the Knights for three full seasons. Furthermore, Capra – who frequently returns to Knights Stadium as the Director of Player Development for the White Sox – is the all-time winningest manager in Knights Stadium history with 197 victories. His best season in Fort Mill came in 2003 when he led the club to a 74-70 record and a second place finish in the IL South – just two games behind Durham for the division crown.
