Baseball Hall of Famer Passes Away at Age 74

FORT MILL, S.C.  - Baseball Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew, who passed away today at the age of 74, made his way through Charlotte as he embarked on a future career in the major leagues.


Killebrew played for the Charlotte Hornets Baseball Club in 1956.  Killebrew was just 20 years old when he played for the Hornets, leading the team with a .325 batting average and hit 15 home runs.  That season Charlotte finished second in the South Atlantic League with a record of 79-61.

Killebrew played in 22 major leagues seasons with the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals.  He led the American League in home runs six times and hit 573 career home runs.  He was inducted in to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.
