DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Tortugas batted around to score all five of their runs in the fifth inning of their 5-1 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads Sunday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Tortugas surrendered just two runs in the series for their sixth series sweep of the year.
Ibandel Isabel led off that fifth inning with a single, before RHP Ethan Clark walked the bases loaded. Two batters later, Brantley Bell lined a single to right, scoring the first two runs of the night. Then, on the very next pitch, Taylor Trammell rolled a grounder into right to score Ventura from second, making it 3-0. Bell would score from third on a wild pitch and Bruce Yari drove in Trammell with a single to make it 5-0.
Jupiter scored their only run in the top of the eighth inning against RHP Michael Byrne in his professional debut. Byrne, a 14th round draft pick last month, allowed a lead-off single to Cameron Baranek, before uncorking back-to-back wild pitches, allowing Baranek to get to third. James Nelson would bring him home with a ground out to third, rounding out the scoring at 5-1.
RHP Tommy Bergjans (2-1) picked up the win, tossing a season-high seven scoreless frames, while allowing five hits and a walk with three punchouts. Clark (1-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs on six hits with three walks in 4 ⅓ innings.
The Tortugas will begin a five games in four days series with the Florida Fire Frogs, starting with a single-admission doubleheader on Belly Buster Monday. RHP Tejay Antone (1-2, 5.82 ERA) will get the ball in game one, while LHP Kevin Canelon (0-0, 2.79 ERA) will start game two for Daytona.
First pitch Monday is scheduled for 5 PM, with coverage beginning at 4:45 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
