TAMPA, FL - Diego Castillo hit an RBI single to left in the bottom of the tenth off of RHP Michael Byrne on Friday night to give the Tampa Tarpons a 3-2 victory at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The loss hands the Tortugas their first five game losing streak this season.
Randy Ventura drew a walk to start the game, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a two-out infield single from Bruce Yari to give Daytona a 1-0 lead after a half inning.
Estevan Florial hit a two-out, two-run home run off RHP Tommy Bergjans in the bottom of the third to give the Tampa their first lead.
After Brantley Bell led off the fifth with a single and stole second, Stuart Fairchild broke out of an 0-for-20 drought with an RBI single to tie the game at two.
After the Tortugas were held off the board in their half of the tenth, Tampa won it in the bottom half. Angel Aguilar began the inning at second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a two-out, Castillo RBI single.
RHP Greg Weissert (2-2, 4.58) earned the win in relief. He walked one and struck out three over two-scoreless innings. Byrne (1-1) takes the loss. He walked three, struck out two, and allowed the game winning base hit.
Bergjans allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings with a walk and and three strikeouts but did not factor in the decision. Over his last four starts, Bergjans has allowed just five runs in 25 innings (1.80 ERA). He is 1-0 with three no-decisions during that span.
RHP Tejay Antone (3-3, 4.48) will get the ball on Saturday as the Tortugas look to avoid a sixth straight loss. RHP Garrett Whitlock (5-3, 2.42) will start for the Tarpons.
First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 6:30 PM with coverage beginning at 6:15 PM with the Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: The Tortugas have lost six straight extra inning games and 7 of their last 8. Daytona is an FSL worst 4-12 in extras… Daytona stole 3 bases for the seventh time this season, and first since 7/23… The Tortugas have been outscored 33-8 through the first five games of their road trip… The Tortugas have lost seven straight road games… Taylor Trammell finished 0-for-4 in his return to the lineup… Brantley Bell finished 2-for-3 with a run and 2 stolen bases. He now has 26 multi-hit games and 3 multi-steal games this season… Bruce Yari drove in a run for the first time since 8/7 and Stuart Fairchild drove in his first run since 8/8.
