KISSIMMEE, FL - The Daytona Tortugas hit three home runs in one inning for the first time in franchise history, in their 4-3 win in six innings over the Florida Fire Frogs at Osceola County Stadium Saturday.
The Fire Frogs got on the board first with a Brett Cumberland solo home run off of RHP Ryan Olson in the bottom of the third.
Florida would double their lead in the bottom of the fourth on an Alejandro Salazar single, scoring Ray-Patrick Didder, to take a 2-0 lead.
Daytona got on the board in historic fashion in their half of the fifth. First, it was Malik Collymore leading off the inning with a solo homer on the second pitch from RHP Devan Watts. Two batters later, TJ Friedl got in on the action, adding a solo home run of his own to right field. After Taylor Trammell lined back to the pitcher for the second out, Luis Gonzalez reached with a two-out single. With the score tied at two, Tyler Stephenson hit a two-run homer to center to give the Tortugas a 4-2 lead. Daytona hit three home runs in a six batter span.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Cumberland added another solo home run off of Olson to round out the scoring.
Olson (1-0) takes the rain-shortened victory for his first with Daytona. He pitched all five innings, allowing five hits, three runs, walked three and struck out three.
Watts (0-1) was handed the loss in relief of RHP Chad Sobotka. Watts went 2 2/3 innings, gave up four hits, and all four runs in the fifth.
The game was delayed 1:54 to start due to rain. After the Tortugas batted in the sixth, the game went into a second delay, this time due to lightning in the area. After a 40 minute delay, the umpires called the game.
The series finale takes place tomorrow morning in Kissimmee. LHP Wennington Romero will get the ball for the Tortugas, against RHP Joey Wentz for Florida. Wentz is rated as the 11th best prospect in the Braves organization.
First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM, with coverage beginning at 10:45 AM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
