DURHAM, NC - Behind four multi-hit games and a 14-hit effort, the Durham Bulls earned a 12-3 win over the Indianapolis Indians in a rain-shortened affair Friday night at the DBAP.
In the second, the Bulls grabbed a 3-0 lead, as Andrew Velazquez tripled with one out and Micah Johnson drove in Velazquez with a triple of his own. Later in the frame, Kean Wong brought home Johnson with a single and Jake Bauers plated another run with a single putting the Bulls in front 3-0.
Indianapolis erased the deficit in the visitor's third with singles by Wyatt Mathisen and Kevin Newman, and doubles by Pablo Reyes and Christopher Bostick pulling the game even 3-3.
Durham regained its three-run lead in the fourth, as Johnson got the offense going with a leadoff double, Wong reached on a bunt single putting runners at the corners, and Bauers followed with a ground-rule double to left scoring Johnson and giving the Bulls a 4-3 lead. Willy Adames drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Joe McCarthy extended the Bulls' lead to 6-3 with a single to center.
McCarthy launched his fifth home run of the year in the seventh inning, giving the Bulls a 7-3 cushion. Later in the frame, following a single by Justin Williams and a walk to Jeremy Hazelbaker, Johnson pulled himself within a home run of the cycle with an RBI single, extending the lead to 8-3. The Bulls added four more runs in the frame, on an infield single by Wong, a throwing error by Reyes, and a fielder's choice to pull away, 12-3.
Joe Musgrove (L, 1-1) lost his second rehab start for the Indians, allowing six runs on 10 hits over 5.0 innings, with five strikeouts, and surrendering two walks. Newman led the Indians offensively going 3-for-4 with one RBI, alongside Bostick who drove in two runs with a 2-for-4 game.
Starter Ryan Weber earned a no-decision tossing 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Adam Kolarek (W, 4-0) was masterful in relief once again, tossing 2.1 scoreless-innings, allowing three hits and fanning five batters, and earning his fourth win of the year including his third-straight. He has struck out 17 over his last five appearances, marking his fifth consecutive appearance with a strikeout.
Diego Castillo (S, 3) was brought in out of the 'pen in the seventh and delivered 1.0 inning prior to the rain beginning in the top of the eighth and concluded the game.
The Bulls (25-14) and the Indians (20-18) match up for game two-of-three at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Forrest Snow (2-1, 2.68) is scheduled to start for the home team against Tyler Eppler (3-1, 2.34) for the visitors.
