DURHAM, NC - Four runs in the fifth inning erased a two-run deficit and the Durham Bulls rallied to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens 6-3 on Thursday night at the DBAP to complete a three-game sweep.
Zach Lee (W, 3-2) allowed two runs in the first inning on RBI singles from Dawel Lugo and Christin Stewart putting Toledo (53-49) in front early 2-0. Lee retired 18 in a row after permitting the opening two runs to the Hens, and was lifted after tossing 6.2 frames and striking out seven, marking his fourth quality start in seven attempts with Durham.
The 2-0 deficit lasted until the fifth when with two outs Rob Refsnyder doubled to right center field, Jason Coats drove in Refsnyder with a double and Coats scored on a double by Andrew Velazquez. Mac James then drove in Velazquez with a single to center, giving the Bulls (59-43) a 4-2 advantage.
In the seventh, Velazquez recorded his third hit, a single to right field, scoring Refsnyder to extend the advantage to three. James drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Coats and give the Bulls a 6-2 advantage.
The six through nine hitters in the Bulls batting order recorded eight of the 10 hits and drove in five of the six runs. The Bulls had more than three batters come to the plate in only two innings, both of which they scored.
Ian Gibaut (S, 8) got the Bulls out of a jam in the eighth inning, entering the game with runners on second and third and two outs but stranding the pair.
In the ninth, Mikie Mahtook singled and Mike Gerber doubled to put runners at second and third. Mahtook then scored on a sac-fly by Jarrod Saltalamacchia cutting into the home team's lead 6-3. Gibaut finalized a Bull City victory with a ground out by Harold Castro to clinch a three-game sweep.
The Durham Bulls open a three-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs Friday night at the DBAP. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with postgame fireworks immediately following the game.
