DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls fell behind early and couldn't recover, falling 17-2 to the Pawtucket Red Sox in the opener of a three-game set Tuesday at the DBAP. Teddy Stankiewicz (5-6) recorded the victory for the Red Sox, while Sam McWilliams (1-1) suffered the loss.
The Red Sox jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Tzu-Wei Lin to take a 1-0 lead. Juan Centeno delivered a jolt shortly after with a three-run home run to right field to extend the lead to 4-0.
Chris Owings continued to pile on for the Pawtucket offense, thanks to a three-run home run of his own to take a 7-0 lead in the fourth. The Bulls responded with a Jason Coats solo home run to shave the deficit to six, but the Red Sox increased the lead to 8-1 with an RBI single by Jantzen Witte in the seventh frame.
The Bulls struggled to generate any momentum, tallying just three hits and only two runs. Gorkys Hernández extended the lead even more on a two-run home run in the eighth, and Witte drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame to make it 11-1. Brendan McKay tallied a deep solo home run to make it 11-2, but the scoring ended there for the home side.
In the eighth the Red Sox scored two more on a Chad De La Guerra RBI single and an RBI double by Rusney Castillo to make it 14-2. Then in the final frame, Witte drove in another two runs on an RBI double to make it 16-2, then Cole Sturgeon drove in another run on a hit by pitch to close the scoring.
The Bulls and PawSox will meet for game two of the three-game series Wednesday night at the DBAP at 7:05. Right-hander Aaron Slegers will start for the Bulls and face off against PawSox right-hander Josh A. Smith.
