DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls took a lead into the seventh inning, but failed to hang on, losing 3-1 to the Pawtucket Red Sox Thursday night at the DBAP in front of a paid attendance 10,214. Kyle Hart (6-4) recorded the victory for the PawSox, while Anthony Banda (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bulls.
In what was a scoreless affair for five and a half innings, the Bulls jumped ahead thanks to a sacrifice fly by Joe McCarthy in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, the lead was short-lived, as Chris Owings delivered the PawSox a three-run home run to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh.
Bulls starter Brendan McKay recorded a terrific start, pitching four innings and allowing just three hits and no runs, while striking out six. The Bulls bullpen of Banda, Cole Sulser and Peter Fairbanks made few mistakes, holding the PawSox in check apart from the Owings home run. However, one hit proved to be the difference as the PawSox did not relinquish the lead.
The Bulls begin a three-game series against the Buffalo Bisons on Friday night at 7:05 at the DBAP. Right-hander Arturo Reyes is scheduled to start for the Bulls and will face off against Bisons right-hander Nick Kingham.
