DURHAM, NC - An early four-run lead was not enough as the Durham Bulls fell 10-8 to the Syracuse Chiefs in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night at the DBAP.
The Bulls (59-44) scored three runs in the first inning on four hits including an RBI ground out by Brandon Snyder, and run-scoring doubles from Justin Williams and Jason Coats to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead through the opening frame.
Syracuse (42-62) knotted up the score 3-3 in the top of the second inning with a three-run home run by Chris Dominguez, his sixth of the year. The blast followed a two-out single by Bengie González and a walk by Tuffy Gosewisch.
In the third, the scoring continued for the home team, as the Bulls scored four runs on a pair of two-run home runs by Andrew Velazquez and Brandon Lowe. Velazquez launched his eighth homer of the year, and for Lowe it was his 14th with Durham and 22nd overall, to put the Bulls back in front 7-3.
The Chiefs scored a run in the third and fourth innings to cut the home team's lead to two runs, a solo shot by Victor Robles, his first with Syracuse, and an RBI double from Dominguez did the damage cutting the deficit to 7-5 through four innings.
Syracuse pulled even with two more runs in the fifth, as Robles led off the frame with a double off of the Blue Monster in left field and scored on a single by Yadiel Hernandez. A batter later, Pedro Severino tied the game 7-7 with a double to center field to score Hernandez. The lead was short-lived though, as Snyder launched an opposite-field homer to give the home side the lead once more at 8-7.
The visitors tied the contest with one run in the seventh on a solo home run by Severino, and took the lead with two more runs in the eighth on singles by Robles and Drew Ward to put the Chiefs in front 10-8.
Velazquez finished his night 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, Christian Arroyo notched three hits, Snyder launched his 13th homer of the year, and Lowe drove in two runs during his two-hit game.
Mike Franco (L, 3-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits over 1.0 inning.
Koda Glover (W, 1-0) earned his first victory of the season for the Chiefs, holding the Bulls scoreless in the seventh inning, allowing one hit and fanning one batter.
The Bulls host the second game of a three-game series against the Chiefs Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Ryan Weber (6-4, 2.11) is scheduled to start for the home team, opposite Phillips Valdez (3-7, 3.25) for the visitors at the DBAP.
