Charlotte, NC --- Shane Peterson banged a pair of homers while Brent Honeywell Jr. fanned nine over six innings to lead Durham past Charlotte 8-3 on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
Peterson took out Tyler Danish (L, 1-5) in the fourth, then launched a deep two-run shot in the eighth against Jake Dunning.
Honeywell (W, 5-5) won his second straight start, working six frames, permitting just one walk and seven hits over 105 pitches.
Durham (37-21) took a 2-0 lead in the first against Danish thanks to an error by Ronald Bueno at third base. Playing in his first Triple-A game, Bueno mishandled a two-hopper by Patrick Leonard for an error. After a walk loaded the bases, Mike Marjama stroked a two-run single to left-center for a 2-0 lead.
After Charlotte (26-32) scored a run in the second, Peterson struck for his first of two homers in the fourth.
In the ninth, Jake Bauers drove a two-run double to right-center for an 8-1 advantage against hard-throwing closer Nick Burdi.
Yoel Espinal surrendered a two-run shot to Bueno in a shaky ninth inning to close out the three-game sweep.
The Bulls bring an eight game South Division lead back home on Thursday night in the first of four against last place Norfolk. José De León (0-1, 6.00) starts against Tides lefty Chris Lee (2-3, 6.89) at 7:05 PM ET.
