DURHAM, NC - Behind a three-run third inning and a strong outing from three pitchers, the Durham Bulls earned a 3-1 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox Friday at the DBAP in the opener of a three-game set as they celebrated Hispanic Heritage Night.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Bulls opened the scoring with a three-run third. After a single and an error, Roberto Peña scored on a sac fly from Michael Russell for a 1-0 lead. A groundout scored Micah Johnson, and later in the frame Willy Adames laced a single to right field, scoring Kean Wong and putting the home side ahead by three.
The combination of Adam Kolarek, Ryan Weber and Diego Castillo surrendered just five hits across the evening, with Kolarek striking out the side in the first, Weber tossing six scoreless frames and Castillo earning a six-out save. The trio combined to strike out 12 batters as the Bulls ended their three-game losing streak.
The Bulls and PawSox battle again Saturday night, when Durham sends RHP Andrew Moore (1-0, 1.69) to the mound opposite RHP Chandler Shepherd (3-4, 4.24) for Pawtucket. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
