The El Paso Chihuahuas scored nine runs in their 14-batter bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday night and beat the Albuquerque Isotopes 14-4. The rally included six hits, three walks and three Albuquerque pitchers, and it was one run shy of the Chihuahuas’ record for runs in an inning.
All nine starting hitters reached on a hit or a walk for El Paso. The Chihuahuas’ 17 hits set a new season high. Third baseman Ripken Reyes went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to tie his season high for hits in a game. Bryce Johnson, Tirso Ornelas and Cody Roberts also had three hits each for El Paso. Designated hitter Yonathan Perlaza went 1-for-5 with a two-run double, his league-leading 21st double of the season. Matt Waldron started for El Paso and allowed two runs in five innings in his first start since being optioned by San Diego. Austin Krob pitched the final three innings without allowing a run and picked up his first professional save.
Chihuahuas manager Pete Zamora was ejected for arguing in the bottom of the third inning, the fourth ejection in his two seasons managing El Paso and his first in a home game. El Paso’s three double plays Wednesday tied a season high. The teams have split the first two games of the series.
