The El Paso Chihuahuas were one strike away from a one-hit shutout Saturday night at Southwest University Park but Sacramento came back to win 4-2 in 10 innings. The River Cats are now 2-0 in extra innings, while the Chihuahuas dropped to 0-3.
Sacramento’s Jake Lamb hit a game-tying two-run single with two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth inning. After the Chihuahuas didn’t score in the bottom of the ninth, Brett Auerbach hit a two-run home run in the top of the 10th to put Sacramento ahead. El Paso designated hitter Yonathan Perlaza went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI single to move his career-high hitting streak to 18 games. Perlaza leads the Pacific Coast League in batting average (.393) and doubles (14).
Omar Cruz made his first start of the season for the Chihuahuas and pitched four shutout innings. Francis Pena pitched two perfect relief innings for El Paso and struck out four. Sacramento’s three hits were the fewest allowed by the Chihuahuas in a game this year. The Chihuahuas have won three of the first five games of the series, with the series finale coming up on Sunday afternoon.
