Ferrell Fires Gem in 3-1 Win

June 28, 2014

The SeaWolves, behind an excellent starting pitching performance by Jeff Ferrell, took down the Trenton Thunder 3-1 on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.

Erie jumped ahead against Trenton starter Matt Tracy in the fourth. Aaron Westlake doubled, snapping a five-game hitless streak. He moved to third on a Dixon Machado single and scored on a Craig Albernaz infield hit for a 1-0 lead.

Trenton tied the game in the fifth when Tyler Austin belted a solo home run off of Ferrell. It was the lone run allowed by the 'Wolves in the game.

Erie regained the lead in the sixth. Machado led off with a double and moved to third on an Albernaz sacrifice bunt. Jamie Johnson singled home Machado for a 2-1 lead. Johnson moved into scoring position on a Jason Krizan single. The knock extended Krizan's hit streak to 10 straight games, matching his season-high. Johnson scored on a Devon Travis knock for a 3-1 edge.

The two runs would prove to be more than enough for Ferrell (5-6) who retired six of the last seven batters he faced, including striking out the side in the seventh. He worked a career-high eight innings earning his fifth win.

Jose Valdez worked a 1-2-3 ninth, earning his 10th save.

Erie was on the season series over Trenton for the first time since 2009 and will go for three straight wins on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m.
