Eugene Finishes Off Sweep Of Boise, Wins Fourth Straight

Los Monarcas de Eugene (8-5, 24-27) won their fourth straight and finished off a sweep of the Boise Hawks (6-7, 21-30) with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon at PK Park.  

Suiting up in specially-designed Star Wars-inspired jerseys as a continuation of Star Wars Weekend, the Eugene Emeralds transformed into Los Monarcas de Eugene as part of Minor League Baseball's Copa de la Diversion initiative.
Once again, the Emeralds opened the scoring early, striking for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded and no outs on the PK Park scoreboard, catcher Jonathan Soto smacked a single into left field to score two runs and give Eugene the game's first lead.
After a scoreless third inning, Boise snapped a 21-inning scoreless streak to start the series in Eugene, scoring their first run of the series on an Ezequiel Tovar double to left-center field, plating Bladimir Retsituyo from first and cutting Los Monarcas' lead to 2-1.
Eugene regained their two-run cushion in the seventh thanks a miscue from the Hawks. With Pedro Martinez on second after a walk and a Darius Hill groundout, Martinez was caught in no-man's land on a pickoff play, but an errant throw from Hawks pitcher Reagan Todd allowed Martinez to round third and head home to score the third run of the game for Los Monarcas.
That capped the scoring for either side as Zach Byrant picked up a two-inning save to seal the sweep and send Eugene into the All-Star Break as winners of four straight.
Eugene exhibited strong pitching all series long, holding Boise to just one run over twenty-seven innings of play during the three-game set.
Monarcas starting pitcher Didier Vargas tossed his longest outing of the season thus far, hurling 5.0 innings while allowing three hits, one earned run, no walks and one strikeout. Jake Reindl, Joe Nahas and Zach Bryant combined to hold the Hawks scoreless the rest of the way.
