Emeralds pitcher Kai-Wei Teng has been named the High-A West’s Pitcher of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Teng is the eighth Emerald to receive a High-A West weekly honor this season, joining OF Ismael Munguia, LHP Jake Dahlberg, OF Heath Quinn, INF Tyler Fitzgerald, OF Franklin Labour, OF Diego Rincones, and RHP Caleb Kilian (2).

Eugene’s nine weekly honors won this year is the most of any team in the High-A West. This season, a total of 32 players in the San Francisco Giants system have earned league weekly honors, most in all of Minor League Baseball (next closest: New York Yankees, 28).

Teng earns his first High-A West Pitcher of the Week award after putting forth one of the best performances of his young pro career thus far, firing 6.0 innings of one-run ball with a career-high 13 strikeouts on Thursday against the Everett AquaSox. Teng’s 13 strikeouts surpassed his previous career-high of 11 set on multiple occasions.

The right-hander has been dominant over the last month-and-a-half, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.61 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 41.1 IP since July 28. His 61 K’s during that span rank second in all of High-A, and Teng’s 130 High-A strikeouts this season lead the circuit.

Teng and the Emeralds wrap up the regular season this week in Pasco, Washington with a five-game series against the Tri-City Dust Devils (Los Angeles Angels) that is scheduled to start on Wednesday, September 15. However, this week’s schedule is potentially subject to change as Tri-City has not played a game since Friday, September 3 due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols and the series opener between the Ems and Dust Devils that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 14 has already been canceled as a precaution to allow for additional testing and contact tracing.

The Emeralds enter the regular season’s final week currently sitting in first place in the High-A West, 1.0 game ahead of the Spokane Indians (Colorado Rockies) and 3.5 games ahead of the Everett AquaSox (Seattle Mariners). The top two teams at the end of the regular season will play in the High-A West Championship Series, a best-of-five series that will determine the High-A West champion.
