LANSING, Mich. - A day after the Great Lakes Loons won while coming back from two different four-run deficits, they nearly lost after having a four-run lead against the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. The Loons pulled out an 8-7, 10-inning victory for their fifth straight win and 19th in their last 23 games.
Lansing (18-24) scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game 7-7 before heading into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Romer Cuadrado singled home James Outman, who began the inning on second base. In the bottom half of the frame, Jake Brodt hit a fly ball to right field caught by Cuadrado and Lansing's runner on second base, Otto Lopez, tagged up heading to third. Unfortunately for the Lugnuts, Lopez left his bag early and the Loons (26-15) doubled him off.
Brett de Geus was able to finish off Lansing after the double play. de Geus (W, 3-0) went two innings allowing just one hit. Meanwhile, it was Sean Rackoski who was unable to keep Great Lakes off the board in the tenth. Rackoski (L, 0-1) conceded one unearned run in two innings on two hits.
Offensively, the Loons fed off the momentum they built on the tail-end of their most recent series against West Michigan. The Loons scored in five of the ten innings while hitting two home runs (James Outman and Niko Hulsizer).
Game two of the Loons' current four-game series in Lansing continues on Tuesday morning with a Kid's Day game in the state capital. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. EDT.
