MIDLAND, Mich. -- How about 10 extra base hits, including six home runs. How's that for action? That's what the Great Lakes Loons and South Bend Cubs combined to do on Sunday afternoon as the Cubs prevailed once again 9-5 to take the first two games of the homestand from the Loons.
It's been a season of the long ball as Great Lakes has also hit a franchise-record five grand slams this season. Dillon Paulson hit two, Luke Heyer has two and James Outman hit the fifth last Sunday. Only the Peoria Chiefs (6) have more grannies than the Loons in the MWL.
Outman (13), Heyer (15) and Justin Yurchak (3) all left the yard. Unfortunately for the final score line, all three home runs were solo shots bringing in just three runs. Yurchak, Matt Cogen and Gersel Pitre each turned in two-hit performances offensively.
The Cubs were an impressive 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position and touched up piggy-back Loons starter Jose Chacin to the tune of eight runs on 11 hits. Bright spots out of the bullpen included Justin Bruihl and Aaron Ochsenbein each producing scoreless outings.
With a 74-48 overall record, the Loons still have the fifth-highest win percentage (.607) in all of full-season minor league baseball. Only Delmarva (.672), Down East (.659), Montgomery (.637), Visalia (.642), and Biloxi (.613) are better.
After winning the Eastern Division in the 1st Half, the Loons are chasing a 2nd Half title, as well. Since the Midwest League went from three divisions to two in 2000, there have been eight instances of a team winning their first and second half titles in the same year. The Loons are in a battle with both the Cubs and Bowling Green Hot Rods for that extra division crown.
