DeTaeye Spearheads Saturday Shutout Win for Hub City

ROME, Ga. — After 13 bullpen appearances to begin his minor league career, Ben DeTaeye took the mound Saturday night for the first time as a starter. The southpaw started what eventually turned into a four-pitcher shutout and a 6-0 win for the Spartanburgers (20-33, 54-65) over the Emperors (24-28, 57-59).
DeTaeye (W, 2-0) and Rome starter Aiven Cabral (L, 4-4) both faced the minimum in the first. Cabral set down the side in order in the second, and DeTaeye faced his toughest challenge of the night. With one on and two out, Logan Braunschweig singled to center field. A walk followed to load the bases before DeTaeye induced an inning-ending groundout to short.
The offenses again went down one-two-three in both halves of the third before Hub City finally cracked to code to start the fourth. Evan Morrison started the inning with a double, and Casey Cook pulled an RBI triple to the corner in right field. Luke Hanson drove in Cook with a sacrifice fly to put the ‘Burgers on top 2-0.
DeTaeye maintained the momentum, mowing down each of the next six batters he faced to polish off five shutout innings. The Spartanburgers added one more run in the fifth. Brandon Crabtree and Cal Stark opened the frame with two singles. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly moved Crabtree around to score.
Cabral stuck it out and capped his night with a pair of clean innings in the sixth and the seventh. Hub City went to the bullpen for Anthony Susac to pitch the sixth. After securing a quick two outs, Dixon Williams singled, and Susac hit a batter and walked the next. A Tanner Smith flyout to right left the bases loaded for Rome for the second time in the game.
Susac walked two more batters in the seventh. With two outs, Luimy Munoz came in and got a strikeout to end the threat. The lead bloomed in the top of the eighth. Drew Christo was the first man out of the Emperors bullpen, and his night started with a hit batter and a walk. An out later, Paxton Kling doubled in the fourth Spartanburgers run of the night. Maxton Martin singled in two more to make it 6-0.
Munoz walked the bases loaded in the eighth but worked around the traffic. Tanner Bauman pitched a scoreless ninth for Rome despite two Hub City hits. J’Briell Easley was given the bottom of the ninth on the bump for the ‘Burgers. After a one-out walk, Easley worked a groundout and a strikeout to complete the shutout.
Rome and Hub City tangle for the seventh and final time this week on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET. Enrique Segura (1-5, 7.07 ERA) will start for Hub City and Rome’s starter is TBD.
